  1. The league wasn't soft like it is now, defenders were actually allowed to guard players, with out getting a foul..Now day's defenders cant even touch an offensive player with out the whistle blowing.....I'm sorry you missed Jordan's era, because it was alot better than the NBA of today........

  2. Yeah, especially in the 90s. 80s defense was good, but not like the 90s when PHYSICAL Defense became a style of playing.

Players had more freedom as one of the answer said:

No hand check rules, no flagrant fouls (or less called, the rule did exits), and no defensive 3 sec.

Let's not forget that forearm fouls were rarely seen..., and Jordan didn't play with restricted (dotted) area under the basket for the first three championships. The shot clock only resets if the ball hits the rim at least until 92-93 season.

The defense back in the day were incredibly physical... just watch the Bulls, Knicks, Heat...or even Pacers (except Smits).

  3. You Are True.

kobe did so poorly in the finals, could not guard pierce or allen and they kept on making 3s after layups, after 3s. jordan would dominate in kobe's era. why? back in jordan's era, there were no fragrant fouls, defensive 3 seconds, or handchecking.

fragrant fouls: if you get clothes lined by raja bell that would just be a regular foul. no ejection would happen and players could have been more physical with jordan than with kobe.

defensive three seconds: a lot of players watch to avoid this defensive rule so they try to stay out of the paint as possible. in jordan's era, players could stand in the paint all day and no call and could contest every dunk, layup jordan would do. that would be much harder to score in the paint than in this era.

handchecking: handchecking stops the penetration and effective slows the defender down avoiding the offensive player to drive as easily as players in kobe's era.

jordan would be avg 40 with these new rules. everything would get so easier with his atchlethism. jordan, with his team back then, could have won 10 rings and would have dominated kobe in every single time they meet.

  4. come playoof time it was NO BLOOD NO FOUL!

EVERYTIME JORDAN WENT TO THE PAINTED AREA LIKE 5 people WOULD WACK HIM AS HARD AS THEY COULD!

    THE BAD BOYS OF DETROIT

    THE KNICKS

    TEAM DEFENSE WAS KILLER

    THEY INVENTED THE JORDAN RULES

    LIKE THE HAQ A SHAQ!

  5. also remeber in jordans era there was no 3 second or hand checking rules

  6. Back in the day players on defense could stick to you like glue. Today that's considered a foul!

  7. no jordan could drive one on one with less amounts of help defense

and jordan was impossible to stop one on one

yes defenses were more physical but if you play basketball you know its easier to score one on one with a person hand checking you that playing one on two or three.

however zone defenses are not to harsh with the 3 seconds in the lane

  8. Just take a look at all the out-of-controll flopping that goes on these days. It's ridicolous.  They were rough and physical back then and you would never get a call for flopping like they do now a days.

  9. yeah and the refs barely called fouls, now it is so easy for a player to get to the line,
