Question:

LPG (Autogas) in 1998 pathfinder?

I have installed an lpg system in my 1998 (manual) pathfinder. I am happy with the results, since I am saving both money and the environment. However, I heard somewhere that modern fuel injected cars, when going downhill, simply stop injecting fuel into the engine when no power is required. Since the lpg system is carburated, not injected, the car would burn fuel whenever the engine sucks air.

Therefore, would it save fuel to switch to gasoline when driving downhill? This switch is easy to do, during the installation a switch was added in the dashboard, don't even have to stop the engine.

  1. What you have heard is true, when a modern fuel injected car is coasting down hill, or "engine braking" no fuel is being used.

Would it save LPG to switch to gasoline at this time, yes, it would. Is it worth it? Maybe. If it is easy to do, why not try it. Keep track of your usage and you will find out.

I found a system available for diesel vehicles with LPG that claims to save up to 20% of LPG used by doing what you are talking about automatically.
