Question:

Lab retriever hind leg problem?

My 9-month old labrador retriever has a hind leg problem. About two months ago, he twisted his right leg. He was running normally as if nothing ever happened. And then suddenly his right leg started to limp. I took him to the vet and was given dog ibuprofen. It got better for a while. Then it came back. He can walk it, but it seems like he prefers not to. This has caused his left leg to bend inward, a weird sight! The left leg is also callused because of it. The right leg has now thinned in form which really breaks my heart. I took him back to the vet and did Xrays, and was told that he did not have anything broken nor dislocated. The vet pinpointed it as a nerve problem. My dog is now under calcium supplements and is recommended daily exercise with physical therapy, for a period of 6 months. I am really doubting this vet. He failed to perform an xray as early as possible, and I find that he is mostly on theory and not on expertise. He has ruled out hip dysplasia by the way. What should I do?

  1. You need to see a specialist...NOW. Your pup is much too young to go through life with a problem like this if you can do something about it.  It may be a nerve problem but there are medications like Rimadyl and Tramadol that could help.  Even some alternative procedures like acupuncture could prove very helpful.

You need to do some research and find the right Vet.  Without a definitive  diagnosis it is impossible to treat it properly.  You should also consult with the dog's breeder, they may be able to offer some insight into the problem.  Good luck.

  2. You should get a second opinion if you don't trust your vet's evaluation.

  3. You should have had an xray done first time around. I would get a new vet and get a 2nd opinion
