Question:

Lacrosse Pains?

Whenever I play lacrosse I play attack, and usually since I'm one of the youngest kids in the group I'm up against much bigger and stronger defenders. Does anyone have any tips, that would help me feel less pain when I get hit.

  1. As you keep playing you will get more and more used to getting checked and stuff. Make sure the sweet spots are covered very well which are in between your gloves and arm pads and then in between your arm pads and shoulder pads. Just keep playing with the bigger/stronger kids and you will get used to taking a beating.

  2. Stay low to the ground when you can.

  3. As a long time defense men, I hate to help out attack men, but I will give in this time.

First off, are you referring to body checks, or stick checks?  Or both?

In regards to body checks, as an attack men, the body checks will primarily come off a slide.  So if you know where the slides are coming from, you can learn to avoid them.  When driving from behind, they should be coming from across the crease or from the crease.  Keep your feet moving, whether shooting or passing.  If you need to stop running to shoot, you are going to take more hits, so learn to shoot on the run.  As long as you get a good shot or pass off, there is nothing wrong with avoiding the hit, even NFL running backs will often step out of bounds to avoid a big hit, so again, keep your feet moving.

It is not as easy to avoid a body check on a ground ball.  Those you are just going to have to suck up.

If you are referring to stick checks, make sure you have the right pads on.  I would even get rib pads.  Also, you should be changing speeds as you carry the ball, as well as avoiding to run in straight lines, step into and away from your defender.  These two tricks will make it harder for him to get your rhythm down, and set you up for checks.

    Hope this helps, good luck.
