Hi all ,

I'm off to the Lake District (in the UK for you overseas readers) ....

unfortunately only for 5 days - and wonder what sights are a "must see" and how to find them.

So far I'm intending to go to Aira Force as I am a keen photographer

Any suggestions please ?

Thanks in advance ,

Alan

  1. Luckily i live 30 minutes south of the South Lakes area and know the region quite well.. I usually get up into the Langdale pikes for a good brisk scramble, somewhere like Jacks Rake on Pavey Ark - its a life affirming scramble on the best of days and gives you really good panoramics.  If you're after something a little less strenuous yet peaceful and picturesque you could always make your way to the quieter shores of any of the lakes.  Best bet would be to check out the region on Google Earth where you can zoom in and click on submitted images.  Thats what i do and i've found some hidden gems all around europe and beyond.  If you're really active you might want to have a look into getting a Wainwrights guide.

  2. cockermouth has the home of william wordsworth...

  3. Beatrix Potter's house at (I think) Amblebridge.

  4. I'm just going to be obvious and unstrenuous.

Keswick, and Frair's Crag. On Derwentwater, a very short stroll from Keswick landing stages.

Castlerigg stone circle. Near Keswick. get there at sunrise for good phots.

Surprise view and Ashness Bridge. On a thousand postcards, but well worth a look. On the road to Watendlath from Keswick.

    Watendlath. archetypal lakeland hamlet.

Brantwood. On the East shore of Coniston. Say what you like about Ruskin but he knew where to build a house with a view. Tea on the terrace with a stunning view across the lake. Best way to arrive: by the steamer 'Gondola'.

    Buttermere

That's all I can think of at the moment but if in doubt, drive at random. Basically, it's all pretty good.

  5. Windermere, Ullswater, Ambleside. Scarfeld Pike (check spelling!)

  6. lakes maybe
