Laptop - Television viewing

Thanks for helping! I just bought a 50 inch Samsung Plasma TV and I can not get it to work as a monitor screen while connecting my laptop. I have screwed in the blue cord that is suppose to automatically get me connected so I may view the internet through my new TV. Please help direct me with a certain imput its suppose to be on or something. Is it something in the menu screen? Thanks for the help
