  2. Spanish names can be originated, as in any other language, by a denotation of place of birth, place of dwelling, nicknames, name of father. You have already been given a very good answer pointing to a possible Galician origin. If the name was originally writen with a "Ñ" the origin can be "caña" or place wher the canes "cañas" grow. If written with an "N", the origin can be a physical description meaning "white hair" that could have been applied, a very long time ago, to a family where perhaps premature white hair was common. And there are many Spanish names that are far from common, amongst prominent Spaniards you'll find Almodovar, Banderas (in English: flags), Aznar, Zapatero (common as a trade, not as a name), Bardem, Rajoy, all far removed from the Garcias, Ramirezes, Gonzalezes, Lopez, etc.

  3. This is what www.ancestry.com has to say about the name,

    Canosa Name Meaning and History

Galician: habitational name from a place in A Coruña province, Galicia, named Canosa, from Galician cana ‘reed’ (Latin canna).

    hope this helps.
