Lawn mower question?

ok, our lawn mower is running into some problems. It is a ride on John Deere. It won't start, the problem seemed to be a dead battery, but we replaced it and it did work for a very short period of time. It works fine once you get it started, but the problem is that it doesn't start consistently. Would starting (or trying to) it every 2-3 days do anything? If there is a electrical problem causing the battery to die then starting the mower wouldn't help at all really would it? I just don't know what the problem is, it obviously isn't the battery since we replaced that. Could it be the starter, and if it is how would I go about replacing it?

is the choke fully closed, and can you be sure it's getting gas to the carburetor?

When you are done with it try disconnecting the battery cables, do this in a dark area and observe any spark that might happen. There is a chance that the unit has a short that is draining the battery. Or you may not be charging the battery which is a different problem.

It you are not getting anything like a click or the engine turning over, then you need to check your switches.  The ignition switch and the safety switches.  You can take your battery to an autoparts store, and they can test it for you, the same thing can be done with the starter.  One other thing to check is the ground from the battery to the frame or engine block.  Now if you are running the mower and the battery is draining, you need to have the voltage regulator looked at.  Its ot keeping up with the demand.

take off the positive cable  than the next time you go to start it and it doesn't start you know its not the battery

Make sure all cables to battery are clean. Also check solenoid switch if you have one.
