Leaking shower,delta

Question

when taking apart single crystal handle shower faucet to find cause of leak,encountered brass or copper retaining ring.Ring is round and smooth and does not want to come off>Do I have to remove it?Does it pry off or s***w off?Faucet is approx ten yrs old. [e-mail]
