Leaky spout on water heater.?

Question

The cap is missing off the spout that is used to drain the water heater and is dripping. Is it just as simple as putting a new cap on or is there more to it? Do I have to fix the actual leaking, if I put a new cap on while leaking will it back up somewhere?

The valve is only to drain water,  IT'S OK to cap it-3/4" plastic cap (PVC)  .50 cents. get 1 that the threads for water hose.
