Question:

Libero/DS or not?

From the answers i got, people say I would make a good libero/DS or setter. I'm not that good at setting, but tryouts aren't for another week or 2. I set against my wall all the time and have my dad pass it to me, but I just can't find the right way to set. I like to serve and I'm a good passer. But I heard that liberos aren't allowed to serve? I want to serve as much as I can in a game. I'm only 5 ft so I probably wouldn't play front row that good. I want to ask my coach, but then I don't want him to put me in a position that I dislike or not good at.

  1. hey don't be nervous about asking your coach something..That's what they're for. DO what ever you like better if you aren't so good at setting try to do some caps and see if you can find a comfortable way to set. If not you can fall back on being a DS. You're also right about the libero not serving. But just because you are a DS doesn't mean you are always going to be a libero in every game.

    Good Luck : D

  2. In "club" volleyball, the liberos are not allowed to serve, but in HS volleyball and in womens' college volleyball, the libero is also allowed to serve.

Don't even think about disliking a position.  I have a rule that girls go to the position where they can most help the team.  If a girl tells me she doesn't like a position, then she can perfectly well sit on the bench.

Practice all the skills, and then discuss with your coach how you can best help your team.

  3. try out  as a libero. if you make the team the coach will put you where your are best. on my team. (i'm libero), if he wants me to serve. he'll just sub me in for the middle, so i can serve for them, then i play back rrow, than sub out for the middle. the only difference is you use sustitutions, but you get to serve

  4. Become a serving/back row specialist.

My brother was one, as well, there is one on my unversity's men's volleyball team.

Pretty much they take out the weak server.  They serve, then play back row for them.  Although the down side to this is that you can only play for 1 player, rather than all of them if you were a libero.

Other than that...I don't know!  It's either libero, serve specialist or nothing!  If you can't set that well, and you're 5ft, my guesses are you can't play setter.  Even though it's said that setters are short, most are around 5'6-5'7", sometimes even taller.  They have to be tall enough to block and dump.

  5. True, you're not allowed to serve, but you would be best off as a libero/DS. somehow i doubt you being a setter, because generally coaches like a taller setter who can help up in front block. Plus, if you're a tall setter, you can dump a lot easier and better which will get you a lot of points. I guess you can kind of cheat and just play backrow for someone but not be known as a libero. Or, you can pass backrow and when you rotate up front, you can play as a setter. That might work.

  6. you should definatly play libero because they can serve in college and in certain club leagues but yeah if your 5ft like me than coaches dont usually look at us for anything besides backrow, because even as a setter you sometimes have to block, hit, jump, and tip.......but yeah i would definatly recommend being a libero because it takes a dedicated athlete that has amazing ability to make split second changes to their platforms and everything, you also have to be fast, small, short, and be able to read hitters and servers.......dont play ds because you dont get to play as much and dont get as much recognition as a player in a position.,..ds is just kinda like a lame not really there position, but libero is really important and hey, who doesnt wanna wear a different color jersey than everyone else and be different??

***hope i helped and good luck!!!
