If it says its an mp3 file is it still possible its a virus?

I just accidentally downloaded a file that was 38kb and Im worried. It said under TYPE it was a mp3 and when it finished downloading it appeared as a MP3 in my folder, it said it was one second. I didn't open it and deleted it right away.

Is it possible it was a virus or was this just a messed up mp3? What should I do? I have AVG...

  1. I'm not sure if this was specifically a virus but yes, you can get a virus from any file type. It's easy to bind a virus to any type of file including mp3's, and even Jpeg's and Bitmap's. Before you open something you've downloaded you can scan it free on www.virustotal.com

  2. It's not a virus, but if you play ti, it will open loads of internet explorer websites up. This not only slows your computer, but it also navigates to loads of advertisment websites, whicih may install spyware/adware.

In future, if you're looking to get some .mp3's from LW, check this out:

Or just don't download any songs less that 3,000kb.

    Hope that helps.

  3. Lime wire is full of virus' avg free edition wont catch alot of them.

Stay far away from lime wire, IT is a legalized virus.
