Is it appropriate to put a solid core on a monkeys fist?

Only a soft core is appropriate. A solid core can make the knot a deadly missil.

No. Too many injuries have resulted from this. They do make sandbags for just this purpose, but I still prefer the old-fashioned monkey's fist.

In the old days, old iron was used like big nuts. The monkey's fist is not intended to be caught. No attemp should be made to do so. It is to tangle on the rail or land on the dock.
