When was Naturalism in its prime? I'm having to research the time periods on these literature movements:Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, Rationalism, and Romanticism. I haven't been able to find any of the time periods these movements were in. I'm looking for the start of each period mainly...and their "deaths"

  1. In the U.S., naturalism really came into being in the 1870s and 1880s.

American Realism predates naturalism (which is really part of realism)--but only by a little bit. It spanned the years from 1865 to 1900/1910 (critics disagree on the year it 'died.')

Modernism took place in the beginning of the 20th century...really in the 1920's (major modernist poem was "The Waste Land," published 1922). I suppose it died when Postmodernism emerged, in the 1970's.

Rationalism took place in the early 18th century in France.

Romanticism was in the late 18th century...in the U.S. it came into being around 1820
