Living in Kingston?

I'm a college student and I'm going to be living in Kingston this summer for an internship. I may be renting a room in Beverly Hills does anyone know about that area? Are there alot of fun things to do? Any cool hangouts to visit? Also, is 550 a month a good price for that area or for a room in general?

Thanks :)

  1. Beverly Hills is nice, as the name suggests its on a hill and its safe. Because its lovely it costs more than usual.

In Jamaica there are clubs and nice places to eat. I think you will have fun. I am not Jamaican but i go to school here and i also live in Kingston (Mona)....just make some friends , be open to the culture shock and have a great time!!!

  2. 1. Where exactly is that place in Beverly Hills? Some places are safe there and others are not safe for a student (especially a female). There could be a burglary risk. Don't take the word of the landlord. Get info from a former resident if you can.

    2. Is it gated? A gated community with a security guard (at least at night) protects you from most security risks.

    3. Will you have a car? Just about every apartment in Beverly Hills is far enough from regular public transportation. Cab fares will be higher once you mention beverly 'hills'.

    4. The US$550 is not a bad price. Thats about J$40,000 for a one bedroom apartment, which is a fairly standard price for a nice one bedroom apartment with security these days. You could get places as cheap as $28k, but thats VERY hard to find (even if you live here!). The key will be to assess the true value of what you are getting BEFORE you make a deposit.

    5. Email me some pictures and/or the name of the apartment and address and i will give you a better answer.

  3. Beverly Hills is an upscale neighborhood and that price is just around what I expect you to pay, so yes, fair price.  My parents live in that neighborhood so I know the area well and have a good sense of the range of rents.

There are tons of fun things to do in Kingston.  The nightclubs are always hopping almost every night of the week.  Make sure you take a trip to Chelsea Jerk Center.  The Bob Marley Museum is in New Kingston, not too far away from Beverly Hills.  Devon House for the best ice-cream and a bit of history- it was the first plantation owned by a freed slave in Jamaica.

There are great malls in New Kingston, Half-way-tree and Sovereign Center.

A little further away, try to visit Port Royal- I don't have to tell you about the pirates' headquarters.  While you are there visit the old fort and the "giddy house."

Make sure you get out the beaches - Hellshire Beach is a popular local beach for swimming, eating fish, listening to some music and generally relaxing.

Good luck, have fun and like in any city, keep your eyes open.

    K

  4. Beverly Hills is nice...pretty upscale and it's close to the University of the West Indies (depending on how far up). $550 a month for a room does seem a little steep to me. U could get somewhere in Mona which is quite nice for much less especially if u get a room mate. There's nothing in the way of recreation up there to do but it's not that far from Liguanea, where has quite a few places you could go and roughly a 15minute drive to New Kingston, which also has a few stuff you might enjoy (again that time is dependent on how far up the hill you'll be staying). Once you have a ride to get around you'll be fine though. I hope this helped!
