there are local calls, local toll, and long distance.  the calling areas greatly depend on the population of your area. if you live in an area where at&t services, go to att.com/LCA  to check what is your local calling area.

Although I am in the UK, the phone company I use is American and I believe their service for local and long distance calling operates in all the US states.

What I will say is that their service is excellent and the customer services dept is really helpful.
