  1. Rainforests are often located in poorer regions of the world.  Most of the native population is unemployed.  Logging jobs provide a tremendous economic opportunity for them.  Also, deforestation opens up more farmland.

  2. On a small scale indigenous communities selectively harvest logs and non-timber forest products (e.g. medicinal plants, fruit, animals) from the rainforest.  Of course logging implies large scale intrusion and this leads to over-harvesting, soil erosion and flooding and loss of species.

With proper forest management, logging provides jobs, revenue for the state and profits for companies. Certain plant species benefit from canopy gaps and even orang-utans use secondary forests. But it is a tricky balance. Problems arise when greedy loggers overcut and encroach upon protected forests or damage the remaining trees.

There are certification programs to audit forest practices and guidelines such as Reduced Impact Logging to aid on the ground managers. But if any good is going to come out of logging the rainforests, then the politicians and loggers need to curb their appetite for short term timber profits.

  3. The Earth's remaining large ancient forest expanses must be protected and restored as "Global Ecological Reserves", and the means found to compensate countries for lost logging revenues, if the Earth's climate, biodiversity and ecosystem crises are to be solved. Continued rainforest logging precludes any chance of the Earth and human societies achieving global ecological sustainability, and it must end.

  4. Only for the rich...it makes them richer...and they don't care about the environment.

Same as the rich Oil Barons and oil companies.

We are just beginning to see what cost this has to the environment.  Tragedies worldwide.
