Lonely or anti-social?

There is a kid at my school, i have no idea who he is and he is a sophomore. We have the same lunch period and we are only in the third day of school but he sits in the same place everyday all alone reading a book. i havent tried to talk to him but i have to ealk by him to get to the vending machines and i wave. He waves back. He seems friendly. i am really tempted to ask him why he is sitting all alone and if i could sit with him since i only really know seniors at the school. He is pretty cute but in a nerdy alternitive artsy looking way. the reason why i am asking is because... he seems like the kind of person that would at least have a few friends... so is he sitting there by choice or because he doesnt know any body. i have ninety percent made up my mind and i think i will see if i can sit with him monday but i dont want to bother him. I am a freshman and know six people that are either Juniors or Seniors. So if i go up to him what should i say. I dont just want to go up to him and say... hey are you just Anti social or a re you a nerd like me? anybody have any nicer ways to ask. Sorry if that is a little confusing...

just flirt..be like whatcha doing sitting here by yourself?

and ask about his book he's reading...

and make fun of the school lunches...

maybe ask for advice on teachers

You could always ask him if he's new.

just sit down with ur lunch and say hi, is anyone sitting here?

and he will say no...

and then just ask, why do u sit over here alone?

and go from there...

dont be rude and say are u just an anti social person...

maybe he has a disability or something.
