Please help me to understand the difference between "Long Course" and "Short Course". My daughter is in a winter swim team and they call it "Winter Short Course". Then now the winter season is over, they have started "Long Course". Because there is no 25m/yd, they call it "Long Course"? I just want to know the clear definition of it. Thanks!!

  1. Short course means it is a yard pool - 25 yards per length. Long course is measured in meters and it is 50 meters per length.

  2. short course is more sprinting where as long course means distance.  In a short course, the point is to be the fastest sprinter, but with long course, you have to be fast and be able to go for longer distances...

  3. Short course: 25 yard pool, sometimes in meters.

    Long Course: 50 meter pool.

Long course is a little over twice the size of a general short course pool. They also call long course pools "Olympic sized pools", and short course, "Junior Olympic sized pools."

  4. Short course is a 25m or 25 yard pool used in competition..

Long course is a 50m or 50 yard pool used in competition.

Either could be an indoor or outdoor pool.

Hope that makes it clear. Good luck for your daughter's swimming.

  5. short course in the US generally refers to a 25 yard pool and in other places it's 25 meters.  Long course refers to 50 meter pools.  The events are the same for everything except for 500 free->400 meter free, 1000y->800m, 1650y->1500m.  All of the meter times are slower than their short course counterparts except 400/500 and 800/1000
