Long neck karen tribe?

i heard the rings around there neck actually support it and if you remove the rings? ur neck breaks or something is this true

I always heard that the neck muscles in the older women had atrophied so much that if they took off the rings their head would fall sideways, their windpipe would get a crimp and they would asphyxiate.  I dont think it is true, though. All of the news articles I Googled talked about the young women taking theirs off in protest. I could not find anything about the old ones.
