Longboard options advise me!?

Hello guys, I am sure you get a lot of these "what size board should I buy so-and-so"

well hopefully you can help me knowing what I am about to ask!

I am looking to buy a longboard, and am planning to progress rather quickly due to experience in other waterboard sports and proximity to the beach.

What I am looking for is a longboard that will keep me busy for years to come, that is, I would not like having to replace my board every year with a progressively more advanced board - for the sack of saving money in the long run.

My specs:

5'7"

150lbs

Please direct / advise me to some good potentials.

Price does not matter.

  1. At your weight, there are tons of longboards out there that will suit the break wherever you surf. I am partial to buying from local shapers, because they know the surf where you will be riding. I weigh 215 (down from 220!) and ride a 9'4" Allison with 'modern' longboard lines. I am partial to Harbour, Bing & Stewart as big name  longboard shapers

I noticed someone suggested a 'mini-mal', which is just a shorter longboard, sometimes called a 'funshape'  and might suit you well at your weight. I have a 7'6" funboard that is great for almost every condition, and it's a little easier to get outside with on a big day.

Check out your local surf shop. The surfers there will help you out, and they know the local breaks better than we do.

  2. get a mini mal 7ft 10 atleast.... might be a LITTLE bit harder to learn but wont have to replace it as fast

  3. If you're looking for a true long board you are looking at 9 foot plus.  If you are looking for nose riding I would add another couple of inches.  As far as shape goers it depends upon what you are planning to do, pretty much start with a performance or traditional shape and go from there.   There are lots of great long board companies:  Stewart, Bing, Hobie, Infinity, Walden, Weber, Austin, just to name a few.
