Question:

Looking for the best country???

I am looking for a latin country for the following reasons in order of importance:

1. improve spanish

2. work with kids

3. lose the materialistic get back to basics

With that stated I am trying to find a place in which im not completely cut off to some niceties( i dont wanna be 500 miles from a big city) like a good dance club from time to time and must be close to a coast/beach. Also a country that has a diverse demographic and in cases of it not being diverse is not widely known for being open and/or not racist. Basically I want to be able to walk the streets without people looking like they've seen a ghost (la negrita) but at the same time I don't want to just blend in with every other person. After cutting my original location of Cuba I am finding it very difficult to narrow it down to another country or city. I can accept the diff. culture of C. & S. America vs the latin caribbean but would prefer being in places more liberal. Any positive input would be greatly appreciated

  1. Every country in South America is racist but I suppose Brazil fits your style. In the south of Brazil you wont blend in but can walk the streets and not feel like a ghost

Panama would be very good also

  2. Panama,of course.I have to disagree with preciosa, there ARE Afroargentinians.

  3. Argentina would not be a good choice because there are no black people there, and they are a little racist, and Brazil also doesnt fit you because even though there are a lot of black people, they speak Portuguese, not Spanish.

I would suggest either Panama, Colombia or Venezuela. They all have diverse backgrounds. You'd fit in in either country.

*IN response to chula.... Go find me a statistic that says how many afro-argentinians there are, because I beleive it is 1%, IF that. There is no way negrita would fit in there. It's a nice place, but she would NOT fit it.

  4. I have live in Latin America in  Mexico & Argentina mainly, both are wonderful ,all latin countries are wonderful .

however you have to be aware that almost all medium and large cities in LA are quite dangerous. If I have to choose I'd say

    Mexico

    -Guanajuato a wonderful colonial city

-Monterrey the 2nd bigest city of the country

-Cancun is the eden  despite hurracans

++Mexico city is wonderful but is overpopulated and it's a mess but if you like caos and, pubs everywhere, parties, noise that's your place

    Argentina

-Buenos Aires has an european architecture wonderful places, and it's cheap..but argentinian spanish is hard to understand.

Mar de plata- has everything, and beach is amazing.

Cordoba is the city I like most of argentina it's colonial but also has modern buildings.

  5. irac

  6. I have heard that Panama is a very nice place to live.  It is affordable & seems to have all of the things that you are looking for.

  7. Sin duda...Costa Rica.  I have lived and traveled throughout Central and South America, but I always come back to Costa Rica.  It goes without saying it is a beautiful country, but the overall safety and culture make it a must visit.  There are hundreds of Spanish language schools and private tutors either in the capital city of San Jose or in a number of the beautiful beach towns.  In addition there are lots of volunteer or work opportunities with kids.  Many of the exchange students participate in programs with local orphanages.  The best part about Costa Rica is simply "Pura Vida".  It means pure life and is the unofficial Tico motto.  I'd recommend doing your homework no matter what.  Have fun, cada uno sabe donde le apriete el zapato.  P.S. there is an awesome music scene so don't worry about not finding a good dance club.
