  2. Some people consider The Hobbit (Bilbo's tale) to be the first, I usually consider The Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring to be the first.

  3. Fellowship of the Ring is the first movie and book in the series.

    The Hobbit is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings series, just like The Silmarillion - which deals with the history of the First Age.
