  1. The cost of tunneling 5 miles underground in LA is equal to the cost of tunneling 20 miles in NY. LA has earthquakes and NY don't. The tunneling codes here are very complicated and expensive. The Metro Red line project cost so much, that it spelled the end of future underground lines.

There are still plans to expand the metro with lines similar to the Gold Line. The west LA corridor is a tough one because land is very expensive in that part of town and none of those fat cats want trains running through their backyard. There is only one option for trains on the westside and that's underground and the way things look, it will never happen.

  2. It's all about WHERE the subway goes, and the size of NYC vs. LA.

In NYC, there are MANY subway lines that go EVERYWHERE. Here in LA, you only have one main subway line. It goes from downtown LA to North Hollywood. There is a spur that goes to Wilshire and Western. That's great if you need to go from downtown to Universal City. But what if you have an audition at Sony Studios in Culver City? NO SUBWAY. Dodger game? NO SUBWAY. See your lawyer in Century City? NO SUBWAY. Go to the beach in Santa Monica? NO SUBWAY.Go to your home in Woodland Hills? NO SUBWAY.

However, they DO have freeways and streets. THAT'S why you need a car here. Because if you need to go 20 miles from LA to the valley, it's a long way to walk, and the bus will take 2 hours.

  3. In some parts of LA, like downtown, people do get by without cars.  But the problem is LA is more suburban and spread out, and there is only 1 subway line and 3 light rail lines as opposed to New York's 26.  Hopefully if the transit measure passes the state legislature and gets on the November ballot and passes the voters, we will get more subways built.

  4. California doesn't have the money. The state is laying off teachers and cutting the salaries of state workers.

Plus, LA is very spread out and covers hundreds of miles as opposed to very compact New York.

Most of us live in one city and work in another since housing prices might not be affordable where our jobs are. 20+ mile commutes are not unheard of. The rail system only works for people that work downtown, which I don't.

Like the other person said, we also have earthquakes.
