We lost are 95 Chevy Astro..A few years back we took it to the mechanic to get fixed, we lost contact with the mechanic because he moved. At the time the car wasn't really important, but I am kind of scared that someone may be using it, and if anything happens with the car ( a crime or accident) the paper trail will lead back to us. WHAT CONSEQUENCES COULD WE BRING UPON OURSELVES IF THE CAR IS FOUND IF WE REPORT IT STOLEN?

  1. You need to contact the DMV and check the status of the title and registration for your vehicle. In the state of Florida insurance follows the CAR so if it is still titled and registerered in your name and someone has an accident you will be held liable for the damages and injuries that are caused. I don't see how you considered this a LOST vehicle. And reporting it as stolen would be fraud. It is quite possible that a mechanics lien was placed on it and it sold. Again, check with the DMV and they can tell you the status of the title of the vehicle.

  2. It very well could be driven daily and if it is and something happens, you still own it.  Why in the world would you let it go for even 1 day let alone "a few years" ?  Contact the police and your DMV and explain the situation. They can best advise you.

  3. If he was working from a business, usually after 30-45 days from the time the vehicle is fixed, if the owner does not come to pick up the vehicle, it goes to an impound yard or junk yard after repeated attempts to contact the vehicle owner.

since it has been a  "few years" now, that vehicle may have gone to the crusher or sold for parts.

One thing you could do if you still have the VIN- go to Carfax & pay the small fee to run a Carfax check on it to see if the vehicle is still on the road, go to your local DMV office & pay their fee to see if they can locate the vehicle.
