I'm selling my 94 Dodge Caravan to a person who is going to take it in and get it scrapped for money. The problem is.. I can't find the keys. Is there a way to put this van in neutral or hotwire it without keys?

  1. putting it in neutral is relatively easy disconnect the shifter linkage at the tranny and manually shift to neutral make sure the wheels are chocked front and rear first so it doesn't roll away. if the wheels aren't strait the only option left is to drill out the ignition pull the little rectangular piece from gear behind lock cylinder, and then turn with screwdriver, need a fairly large drill bit to do this around 1/2"drill right into where the key inserts.

  2. How is the car going to be moved?

Is it going to be towed with a tow truck?  If so, it wont make any difference whether or not you have the keys.  They just simply pick the car up and carry it to wherever.

If it's going to be driven or towed with a chain you will have to either destroy the locking mechanism or take the VIN and proof of ownership down to your local Chrysler dealership and have them make a new key from the data files, providing it has the original ignition switch from the factory.  Kind of a waste for a car to be scrapped.

  3. No. You will have to break the steering column to access the ignition lock. The actual ignition switch is on the lower column, and if accessed, you may start the vehicle, but not unlock the steering.

You might go to the Dealer with your manufacturer's ID on the dash and obtain a new key, but it will cost you.
