  2. I would avoid a road bike and stick with something that puts you in a more upright position when you ride.

    Double check with your doctor for his opinion and check out your local bike shop to get properly fitted for a bike. A proper fit will give a more comfortable ride.

  3. lots of people with back trouble ride recumbents.  recumbents can also be very fast, as they have better aerodynamics.  there was a manufacturer called BikeE that closed shop a few years back, but they sold SO many that theres still a lot on the road and used marketplace (they were kinda the "VW beetle" of 'bents).
