Question:

Lower leg injuries??? Please help!?

Two weeks ago I pulled my right groin muscle at a practice. I thought that it had gotten better after two days because it didn't hurt any longer, but when I tried to play in my rugby game it started to hurt again. I ended up not playing so as to not injure the muscle further, but my quadricep started to hurt also.

A week after that, after applying ice and heat, my groin felt fine but my quadricep was questionable. So I played in my team's game for about 20 minutes and during that time my ankles started bothering me as well as my quadricep.

The day after that I had a soccer game and in that game not only were my quadriceps hurting, but also my ankles partially and also my shins.

Can someone please help me because it seems like my injuries are spreading through my legs. And saying "Stop playing rugby" is not the answer that I'm looking for. Thanks.

  1. I think that you shouldn't stop playing rugby. Just take it easy, and tell your coach that you can only play for short periods at a time. It's not good to overwork your muscles as it is, nevermind when they're already injured. As far as the pain

'spreading', I wouldn't worry about it. You are just putting too much pressure on your legs. Since your quadriceps can't handle your exercise, it is shifting all of the weight onto your ankles. Take it easy, and get well soon!

  2. To be honest mate, not playing for a while is the only recipe to fix your problem.  if you dont want to hear it then you must'nt want to fix the problem.  When it comes to muscles the only real medicine (after cold & hot solutions, massages) that will work is rest.  how can you fix something if you dont allow it to heal.  I've played rugby a long time and seen people try and play through these injuries, long story short you'll end up shorting your career weather it be Social or professional.  Be smart and you'll enjoy a future in the game.  Continue to try and play on it and you'll be watching the game from the side lines earlier than you should've.  good luck mate!!!

  3. You need 3 weeks rest from playing, then a week or two to edge your way back in. It is simply not possible to get muscle and tendon injuries, and then dive in early. You MUST rest it.

What does the club/school physio say?

My advice would be to take 2 full weeks off (from playing or training of ANY kind), then do some light training, gentle kicking from hand practice VERY gentle at first and see how it feels. Any pain or discomfort stop and rest further.

You really do need the advice of someone on site who is party to all your medical history etc.

  4. You need to take a break from rugby, get some decent physio in and check in at the hospital for xrays to make sure it's not any broken bones/fractures that you weren't aware of.

You would know for definite if you'd had a serious injury, but it's still important you rest up and let your body recover or else you are going to keep going until you really hurt yourself, take it from someone who's been there!

Just do light training and physio, but don't play a match and don't do any tackling until you are sure you are back on form!

  5. Best leave it to the professionals... go see your family dr.
