Question:

Lump on horses tongue?

A few weeks ago i noticed a lump on my horses tongue, quite far back (about inline with where his molars start). I hosed it down and suspected a bite or sting from either plant or wasp and it didn't seem to phase him. he was a little down in the dumps and initially lost a minute amount of weight (I guess it was sore). I kept a close eye on it, hosing it twice a day but he was eating and everything else is fine. the lump has decreased in size, but still hasn't gone,. and I haven't wanted to put his bridle on, incase the bit agitates it. Should I call the vet and get it checked out? He doesn't have anything else wrong with him and he's eating and drinking fine.

  1. I think you should call a vet.

  2. Could be that his teeth need floated and a sharp edge of his molars 'cut' his tongue...

Maybe a seed from his hay got into a small cut on his tongue and caused swelling..

Or a reaction to eating a thistle or he got a wasp or bee in his mouth during grazing...

Hard to tell.  If the horse is eating and drinking well...and the lump is going down I would continue to watch it.  I would also hesitate with a bit until the lump was gone.  Can your horse be ridden in a halter or a bitless?

Having a lump for a few weeks would bother me though...and I would at least call my vet to see what their thoughts were on the matter.  It sounds like it is improving though...because of the decrease in size.

  3. does he flick his tonuge out? if so, then it's more than likely a bug bite..
