MLB Logo Help Question?

How did the persons who designed the logos for the mlb teams come up with what the desgn wood look like? i want to design some logos for my "fake" teams and not sure where to start. any ideas? thank you

well what i would do if i were you is pretty much say that teams name and draw the first thing that comes to mind

example is expos=star comes to mind then add some creative designs
