  1. I worked at Trader Joes. I was a low end high school student employee, but the managers made good money and it was their career. They always seemed happy and would say they enjoyed their job. Our store had fun things too, like baseball games and picnics. People at Macy's never seem so happy, as where Trader Joe's employees are. I would say you have a better chance at making a career at Trader Joes. People I started with intended on making it their career, and they were given the opportunity to excel. You just have to make it clear what your intentions are with the company from the start. Tell them you want to move up and they will tell you what you need to do. They also give quarterly raises to everyone. The harder you work, the bigger the raise you get. I would say the extra $1 to start is worth the longer night. Night shifts were usually pretty fun and laid back at my store. Good Luck!

  2. I never worked at either chain, but I can tell you that I see a lot more smiles on the employees at Trader Joe's than I do at Macy's. Trader Joe's is also growing faster, and they are known for promoting from within. 2am in NYC is not so bad.
