  1. I find this question curious since I've never felt that a magazine is essential... And looking at the list of things that you are looking for in a magazine, it looks like you want several magazines in one.

When I was 13, I was recommended to get GQ twice a year for fashion ideas (for when I wanted to go formal). But for regular fashion, I wouldn't go for a magazine. What about your personal style? What about your own ideas? I always just looked around at movies, movie posters, movie trailers, TV shows and magazine COVERS to see what people were wearing.

You could also make a list of the magazines that you thought had a valuable contribution to fashion and just hit their websites every couple of months. There's more than one magazine on the shelves that has little content beyond what is visible on their website...

As for sports, I always just used to go for specific sports interest magazines. I was interested in bodybuilding and biking, so I go Muscle & Fitness and BIKE magazine. My criteria for what was suitable was a focus on the actual topic that it purported to be about. My cousin and I also experimented with the magazine called FLEX, but found it catered a bit too much to s**y spreads and celebretizing bodybuilders and not enough material on actually exercising to build the body.

Honestly, I just wouldn't trust a general interest magazine to get me what I wanted about a specific sport.

So define your interests. Figure out what you need from a magazine. Figure out which interests are best served by a magazine. And pick one. For the rest, hit the net.

I was pretty happy with the fashion tips I got from BIKE magazine and I still pretty much follow that code (knee length baggy shorts, thin under-tee (short or long sleeve according to weather) and outer short-sleeve shirt). 10 years later, the look is still pretty much the same, with an increase in the length of shorts by about 6 inches.

I currently have a job as a translator (and am working on some designs) with an international bike clothing company...

Oh and PS> NEVER rest your decisions on what music is cool on what a magazine tells you. YIKES! If you want samplers, go to Amazon or iTunes or a bazillion other places and make your own decisions.
