Question:

Maggots attracted to light?

Last summer my glass back door was covered in maggots.

It was dark at night and we had the kitchen light on, I opened the door to let the dog out and screamed... the maggots had trailed all the way down my path from my food waste bin to my back door, my husband came out with a flash light to see what was going on when we noticed the maggots turning towards the torch light... I turned off my kitchen light and they all followed him back towards the bin???.

I have searched the net for info on maggots and light but cannot find anything , a fisherman wrote back and said he had never heard of this? ..This is not a hoax or a joke...

Does or can anyone shed some light on this? I am dreading a hot summer, I double bag all food waste.

  1. Last night (15 Sept 2009) my glass kitchen door was covered in about 100 maggots.  They were definitely attracted by the light after an hour with the light off they were gone.  Really disgusting.
