Maintaining a healthy tank-

I've read that it's a good idea to add " a bit of salt" to an aquarium to help prevent disease. I have a 30 gallon that's been set up for about a month. How much to I use and how often?

  1. Well, if you dont have brackish fish, I'd suggest about 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons. And I'd refresh it with every other water change, unless you want to invest in a refractometer ... this way you will be sure your not putting too much salt in.

Salt does not evaporate when the water does. the only way it comes out is with water changes, and you can never be too sure exactly how much is going out, how much is left and how much to add.

But this is just my opinion.

Also you wont want to just dump in 6 Tablespoons of salt, and of course you dont just use regular table salt...

But you will want to put the salt in a bit at a time, giving the fish time to adjust to the levels as you add it in.
