  1. I've never heard of that particular book, but looks like it's inexpensive, a recent publication, easy to understand..etc

If I personally was to start shaping surfboards, I would buy a DVD called Shaping 101. It is in a series which also includes Glassing 101 and Airbrushing 101. Those would be great too, depending on how much you want to do yourself.

Another DVD series that is helpful is The Master's Shapers, which is a lot more costly, but involves knowledgable designers and shapers in surfing. This series includes Master Shapers I, II, and Master Glasser.

You can buy them in the set or the individual DVDs here: http://www.shapersaustralia.com/category...

I personally like the video idea because you can watch the person do what they are talking about, instead of just reading the text and looking at the pictures. The DVDs would cost more money, so depending on how much you would want to spend would determine that purchase.

Anyway, back to your question. I'd say buy the book. Read it cover to cover, inside and out. If you have any questions, if it's not clear, if it doesn't cover a topic you want to know, go to other sources:

    - Go to your local surf shop. Tell them what you are doing. They will direct you to a person that can help you. They love talking about surfboard design.

    - Go to a bookstore and find other books about surfboard design. They might be more detailed or shed some light on a topic your book didn't.

    - GO ONLINE. The internet has information on everything. You just need to find it.

Good luck. Have fun. Be sure keep your first.

  2. I know they are made of fiber glass, foam, poly resins, etc.

These same products are in the automotive sector in wings, spoilers, flarings, corvette parts, etc.

It is a very messy, dirty, chemical involved job.  It is not something you can just do in a spare room of a house.  Should be at least a separate garage, ventilation system, air masks, even a body suit wouldn't hurt.
