Male Betta [i need some information]?

my male betta has horizontal stripes is this normal? my betta is really young at the moment so to me it looks like a male and a female but the pet shop owner is positivley correct that it is a male

please help... any further information i should know about male bettas please feel free to write

Are the fins short like a female's, if so, it is a female.they have horizontal stripes when they see an attractive male.

horizontal stripes means your fish is not happy! he's showing aggression. Do you have any other fish with him in the tank or next to him where he can see them? Or any mirrors close to his tank where he can see his reflection?

If it has those huge feathery, coloured fins, it's a male.

If it's small and more guppy-like, that's a female beta.

(males and females do not look the same for betas)

when i got mine the dude told me they are teritorial so keep them seperate..........just a glass bowl will suffice.

Horizontal lines signify STRESS!! its called stresslines...

If it happens too often, your betta might be in danger..

Vertical appears on female.. Means the are ready to meet them HUSBAND n give birth! haha

horizontal stripes on a betta are stress stripes...vertical stripes are breeding stripes. There are short finned bettas that even the males will look like a female even to people who are familiar to betta. The pet store people often don't know either.  You betta needs a 2.5 gallon tank at the very least and 5 gallon ideally. He also needs a filter and a heater. Betta are tropical fish that like water around 80 degrees. Betta do not like to much current so a gentle filter or a baffle to deflect the current is best. If you give your betta a nice roomy heated filtered tank he will loose the stress stripes and be a happy healthy betta.
