Life is composed of organisms.

These organisms are capable of maintaining a stable open boundary with their environment which allows for reacting to stimuli, growth and some method of reproduction.

Viruses are usually not considered as being living organisms because of their inability to maintain themselves chemically and cannot reproduce independent of living cells.  This topic is still debated scientifically because some parasites and symbionts have similar traits.
