Maria as French Open Champ?

Question

Who here besides me thinks Maria Sharapova has a legitimate chance at winning the French Open? Granted she has double faulted 36 times in three matches, but her second set against Knapp was phenomenal. Her footwork was great, her anticipation impeccable. And if you think about it, even though she was pushed to three sets in each of her first and second round matches, she had an awesome first set against Rodina who did an incredibly awesome job at counterpunching, and she had a good 1st and 3rd sets against mattek also. May I also point out that her play has been getting better and better as the tournament progresses. I really think she can go all the way. And if you think about it, even though Safina is riding a 9 match winning streak going into their 4th round match, Maria has a 6 match winning streak herself (not counting her default in the semis of rome) and she has the best record on the women's tour. So who's with me for Maria to win it all?

well with both the willam sisters being eliminated.. that takes some of the tension off sharpova... but she has struggled to show her best game... and if she runs into one of the serbs at there best.. sharpova will get the bad end of that stick...

I agree that Maria could win IF she continues to play like that second set...that last service break, every return was down the line for a winner or forced error...it was great.

there's a 50-50 chance that maria may win at roland garros... besides, she may possibly twitch another ankle or injure her wrist and stuff like that... there are many players who are better thatn maria on clay, plus she has problems on her serving skills... double faults maybe???

She has a huge opportunity considering the William sisters are out.  I'd have to watch her next match and see how she's serving out there.

I must say - I always enjoy watching Maria you get to learn lots from her (well at least I do).  She keeps her mind controlled even though she's winning 4-0, her face expression makes her seem as if she is loosing.

Is possible. We are liking her very much in my town in France and many prefer her.  I like she also likes fashion. She is very strong thinking.

As of now, I think that Ivanovic will win the French Open because her game is so solid. As for Sharapova, I believe that her serve is going to be her downfall. Like in the earlier rounds, she double faulted so much because her ball toss was being blown off its initial destination.

Just now, I just saw Avanovic bagel a girl easily. On the otherhand, I look at Sharapova's set score, adn they are really close (7-6) or really easy (6-0). Avanovic's scores are more consistent around the (6-2)-(6-3) area(this is an average).

Maybe not now. Safina might upset her in the 4th round.  If not Kutnetsova or Ivanovic might stopped her.  But she's improving, maybe the next couples of years, yes.

I am and on top of all the stats you pointed out, she looks great. I mean I have never seen her in such great physical shape. I say lets root for Maria, she's the best.

I don't see it happening. She is struggling with some pretty low- ranked players. The road ain't getting any easier , going forward.  GO SWEET ANA IVANOVIC !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm with you. She has the best record so far though it reflects mostly her performance on hardcourts, not much on clay. And those 6-match winning streak actually came from hard-fought battles lasting 2-3 hours each match. Well, if she continues to play well like in the 2nd set of the 3rd round then she'll surely be a good contender for the title. I just hope Maria will come up with big serves, less those scary no. of DFs and balls struck couple of centimeters outside the line trying to convert them into winners. Like what the commentator said, she must give herself a margin for errors. When i saw her match stat against KK, i think she's improving on the net approaches, 11 of 13. But she has to be at her very best if she wants to go pass Dinara, who has been playing well on clay lately, and to continue her RG campaign. I do hope Masha wins!

with that kind of performance..i know that she can win the roland garros... but threats are still in her way... like safina, dementieva, ivanovic, kuznetsova... but the best thing about sharapova, she can get through things from under...

she must stick to her guns...

though she has one of the bestfootwork on the tour, we know that she does'nt slide on clay and thats a very big disadvantage. But with her big groundstrokes she can compensate with these weaknesses...

and we know that the mental toughness that maria shows throughout her career  is a sign of great champion...

i would be very happy if maria can complete her career grandslams in singles... VAMOS maria
