I just read something about Marshall Ferret food being bad. Does anyone know if this is a good brand or not? It was something about chemicals. I had never heard something like that before, so I thought I'd ask

  1. my boys are on an EVO & 8-in-1 mixture. marshall's is ok, certainly better than some of the things people give their ferrets, but it's not really a good quality one either.

here's a chart of some ferret food with the good & bad of the different kinds out there:

    http://www.ferret-universe.com/care/food...

i stay away from marshall's, not because it's a horrible food, but because i don't like the company. the main part of their business is the breeding of ferrets and beagles to sell to research labs. (they do this in addition to breeding ferrets for pets & making pet supplies.) i just have a difficult time contributing my dollars to a company that serves to harm ferrets every day.

the pet stores only feed it because most pet stores sell marshall's ferrets.

  2. I don't know about chemicals but, Marshalls has veggies and i think some fruits and ferrets have a hard time digesting it. I use Marshalls ferret food on my ferret because of the one yr. guarantee which states that your ferret has to eat Marshalls for a yr. but after the 1st year I'm probably going to switch. plus its quite expensive i mean $20 for a bag of food the size of a small bag of dog food. try checking the "ferrets for dummies" book it has a few food suggestions and great advice on care.

  3. its a good brand of food i believe thats what the ferrets that where breed and are at the pet store thats what they where feed since they where able to eat solid food

  4. Marshall ferret food is okay for a ferret, but definitely NOT the best! My ferret was being fed Marshall's and I switched her onto Zupreem, and there is a huge difference! Her fur is softer, she's happier, and she smells less. If you have a ferret that's on Marshall's, please consider feeding them Evo Ferret or Evo Feline. I feed my ferret a mix of Evo Ferret, Zupreem, and Evo Red Meat Small Bites dog. I know you'll notice a huge difference!

  5. i think it is ok

  6. Marshall ferret food is actually what I used to ALWAYS feed my ferrets. However, after having 3 of them end up diagnosed with Insulinoma, I decided to try a different brand.

I now use 8-in-1 brand ferret food. It is cheaper, has the perfect balance of fat and protein, and they ferrets love it. My fuzzies so far are much healthier on this type of food.

I'm not against Marshall and wouldn't say that caused the disease in my ferrets that have since passed. However, I am going to continue with the 8-in-1 brand.

As far as chemicals go, I've never heard anything like that.

For an FYI, make sure you never buy a ferret food that comes with pieces of dried fruit or is shaped in little triangles.

The fruit cannot be digested by the ferrets in the small amount of time it is in their digestive tract. As a result, they could end up with intestinal blockages. The triangle type food easily gets stuck in the roofs of their mouths.

In addition to the comment about Marshall Farms ferrets. Yes the makers of the food are a division of the same company. However, My Marshall Farms ferret required lifesaving surgery at only 1.5 yrs old and it cost me $1200.  The vet told me it was poor breeding. She was diagnosed with fatty liver disease and I spent a lot of money over the years treating her disease with medication!

So...I really don't associate Marshall with quality at all.
