Martial Arts Wushu?

Am I too old to start wushu training? I'm 24 years old and am very interested, but I know I'm going to be in a class with younger students like 16 years old.

Plus do I need to take a seperate gymnastics class to help out with the wushu, because of the jumps?

  1. you gain flexibility in wushu a lot of it and with that flexibility you jump high you can do gymnastics too i guess it will help on the acrobatics

  2. There is no age limit, especially at 24.  You are still plenty young for any thing physical.   They will teach you everything you need to succeed, all you need to do it to try your best.

    Good Luck!!

If you are looking for self defense, be sure and ask your instructor if they teach with that in mind, or if they are more of a performance school.  Wushu is flashy and pretty, but can be used for self defense if you train that way.  Many Wushu schools are performance schools, not fighting schools.   Just a FYI, but it does all come down to what you are looking for.

    Good Luck!!

  3. No you are NOT too old.

As for gymnastics you probably will not need it.

I have been in the Martial arts since 1984, If you

take your time and have patience, you will improve day by day. Best of luck

  4. Do note..."Contemporary" Wushu is what most people are thinking of when they hear the word "Wushu". Keep in mind that the word "Wushu" is  general term for all Chinese martial arts. There is Traditional Wushu and Contemporary.....for contemporary, gymnastics classes will enhance your training if you're interested in learning how to do 720 butterfly twists and landing the splits or something like that.  :-)  However, many of my friends did not take extra gymnsastics classes.

You're not too old at all.  If you can get past the fact that there would be younger people in your class, you'll have fun. In fact, one of my friends is 56 years old and does contemporary Wushu!  Jumps and everything!!

It all depends on what you're looking for. Many people will assume that everybody else is looking for serious fighting art like they do, but in reality, some people want the "flash" of Wushu, and the challenge of the jumps and intricate movements..... If the that floats your boat, then go for it.

Also, some Wushu schools these days will include self defense and sparring in their curriculum. Check out the Wushu studios in your area, and have a look at what they do.

  5. To be honest with you, Id take Wing Chun if you wanna get into a Kunf fu geared towards woman of any age. Dont need to be as flexable and it has a lot of practicle real life moves. I took Hung Gar kung fu and a friend i have took Wushu and Id take him in about 3 seconds. But to each is own. So good luck with any decision you make and P.S.  You really dont need the separate gymnastics class.
