  1. It's "Machu Picchu"

Machu Picchu ('Old Peak') is a fantastic city It was built at nine thousand feet, by the Incas , and is located in  in Peru

Hiram Bingham, a Yale archaeologist (Think "Indiana Jones") was the first Westerner to see the ruins of this city. The locals had known of the city and for s small fee Brigham was guided to it.

It's believed the Inca used it for secret ceremonies but it has astronomical connections also. "The Intihuatana stone (meaning 'Hitching Post of the Sun') has been shown to be a precise indicator of the date of the two equinoxes and other significant celestial periods. The Intihuatana (also called the Saywa or Sukhanka stone) is designed to hitch the sun at the two equinoxes, not at the solstice"

There are about 200 buildings with an estimated population of 1,200 people. Terraces are throughout the city and on the slopes. These were used to grow much of the food.

The city suffered from European diseases and was likely abandoned in the early 1500s.
