  1. You can try some web sites that sell used cars.

(craigslist, auto trader, buy & sell, ebay, etc)

But for $900-$1000, you'll be getting cars that barely work, over 300,000 km on mileage. (engines with over 300,000kms are just about at their limit before they stop working)

Most people selling cars for that price are just getting rid of the "body" of the car, where, if you are a mechanic, can do work yourself to fix it up to make it run. Or pay a mechanic to fix it up. (but that would defeat the purpose since you are paying more money in the long run).

As for the miata, even the earliest 1990 model will range between $4700 - $8800. Since Miata's are convertible, most people only drive them in the summer, so despite them being very old, they usually only have around 200,000 kms. Works out to be around 8000km/year. And miata's have very reliable engines that run forever, so they aren't exactly cheap.

To throw out a comparison, a 1994 miata can range up to around $8000, and you could probably get a (8 year newer) 2002 honda civic for that same price as well.

And of course, newer miata's in their early 2000s will cost at least $10,000 and up (depending on condition), and the newest one's will be over $20,000 when bought used.

    Hope this helps.

  2. There is no car that will cost that amount that will be worth repairing. Get something a little more staid and you'll be better off.

  3. Any Miata that you can find in that price range is going to take a lot of work and parts. As a matter of fact about any running Miata is worth 2 grand.

Hardly a month goes by that someone doesn't offer me 3 grand for one of mine and they are almost 20 years old.

I am not saying you can't find one, but a used engine brings an easy 500 dollars, the transmission another 400 dollars. Just one that has a good body is worth a grand in body panels to a spec racer (also to some one who has creamed theirs and wants a new body to mount up the power train).

    So lots of luck.

  4. Believe it or not, you should try Overstock.com.

Click on "Cars" at the top of the page, search "Used Cars," select "Mazda" and click Search.

On the next page, enter "Miata" and search again.
