Medieval Party for Mums 50th?

Question

I'm throwing a surprise party for my mums bday, she's turning 50 so I want to make sure its a good one! She loves family history and anything thats medieval so I thought it would be the perfect theme. I'm completely stuck for ideas though and don't even know where to start. I need ideas on decorations (it will be outdoors and I'd prefer to make them than buy them), costumes, invitations, and names to give people. Websites would be great too.

Oh that sounds like FUN!!  go early medieval, so the costumes would be very easy- basically smock-type clothing... here is "arthurian" period basic garb- SO so easy to sew. http://www.garbtheworld.com/pgs/hist/art...

Eat without forks- use a spoon and a knife and fingers for the main dish. Eat off of wooden plates or off of a large slice of bread as a plate.  

There are TONS and tons of authentic recipes out there too- just google for medieval food recipes.    You'll have to drink ale and mead! Yummmy

what a great idea!

you could do a tudor england theme (think the other boleyn girl, the tudors) or a shakesperean theme!

outdoors is a great idea, especially at night. you could buy or easily make lanterns in a medieval color scheme (red and gold, green and purple, etc) and string them all over the outdoor area. get picnic tables to put together like it's a banquet table. get plenty of candles. you can also make banners/posters with a family crest on them. make sure you have great medieval music (try loreena mckinnet, the mediaeval baebes, and other renaissance faire-ish music).

if you do the tudor england theme, you could give everyone a court name, "king henry," "anne boleyn," "kathryn howard," etc (you could look up the names of all of henry's wives) and that would help with costume choices too. if you do a shakespeare theme, give people names of characters in his plays.
