Hi, hope someone can help me with this one.

When the ovum and sperm fuse together, does meiosis cell division happen, to produce the zygote. Then mitotic divison as the zygote grows? So confused!

Thanks for any help.

  1. good tutorial about Meiosis and Mitotic

  2. meiosis occurs to form the sperm and egg then mitosis occurs in the fertilized egg

  3. Yes u r right

Meiosis is the cell division which takes place at the time of reproduction and

Mitosis takes place at the time of growth

  4. The meiosis takes place before zygote formation i.e. at the stage of formation of gametes (Gametogenesis).

Formation of male gamete is called spermatogenesis. The process is complete before reproductive fusion of sperm and ovum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spermatogen...

Formation of female gamete i.e. oogenesis also starts before actual fusion but is arrested at the stage Metaphase- II (Metaphase of meiosis- II). It is completed only after ovum fuses with sperm and results in discarding 2nd polar body and formation of zygote. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oogenesis#M...

And, you are right about unicellular zygote dividing by mitosis and becoming muticellular.
