Memory settings when overclocking.?

Question

hi this just came back to me the other day and has been bugging me.

when i first got my new pc up and running and was starting to overclock my cpu i would not post no matter how small the increase in the fsb/voltage when my cpu - memory settings was at "Linked" but i can now overclock like crazy with it at "Unlinked"

can anyone explain this.? thanks

memory - 2 x 1G corsair xms2 dhx 800mhz ddr2

cpu - intel e6600 @ 3.3Ghz 25oc idle 35-40oc load. 1.41v

much depends on the likings of your motherboard.  ASUS motherboards have always seemed to be finicky about the ram they use.  I have an ASUS board that will not use plain ole G.Skill 800mhz memory.  The memory works good in my Gigabyte motherboards.  I can put some cheaper Win AmpX ram in the ASUS board and fires right up.  

I think by referring to the ram as unlinked and linked you are talking about ganged and unganged.  Or that is the term used on my Gigabyte board.  The way the bios explains that is ganged is using the memory slots as one in dual channel  mode.  Unganged is using the ports split into two seperate channels and running them in dual channel mode that way.  I kinda had to read that then sit with my eyes closed and cross my legs Indian style and put my thumbs and forefinger together and hum for 40 minutes before it set in what was going on...
