  1. When you mention a poem or a story you put quotes around it.

    e.g. "Summer"

When you mention a book you underline it.

Good luck on the paper ^^

  2. Italicize or underline for a long written work, such as a novel or play.

For a shorter work such as a magazine article, put the title in quotes.

  3. If you're writing the paper on a computer and have the option of italicizing the title, do.  That's what the professionals do, and underlining is just a substitute for italics when they're not available--such as when you're writing by hand or using a typewriter.
