In the case of Mesopotamia, it was 1) a fresh water source (Tigris & Euphrates), 2) Sanitation, 3) Irrigation for farming, 4) Architecture, for building adequate storage facilities for grain, 5) Engineering, 6) a central Government for uniting the villages (Ur, for the Sumerians), 7) a written language (Cuneiform), 8) An area deginated for the domesticated animals!
