Mic distortion?

when recording i'm getting a mean case of distortion like a fan or something. what's goin on? with mic boost i hear it and the voice sounds good. without mic boost i gotta scream into the mic and get minimal results, yet no distortion can ne body please help!!!

Your recording amp must have a VU meter.

When you record, udjust the line in volume high enough so that the VU meter is close to red but only rarely exceeds it.

If you don't have a VU meter, then do trial and error, until you find a position of the Volume in dial that is good enough without distorting (or buy a better recording amp).

First of all have you got the right impedance microphone?

Is it a vocal Mic or instrument Mic?
