Milford Track Gear?

I'm planning on walking milford track in march next year and just want to know if the huts have stoves or do I need to bring one?

Carefull!

There are 2 ways of walking the Milford Track.

There's the guided walk, and there's the freedom walk.

Numbers are limited on both.

Which are you?

The guided walk gives you hot dinners and breakfast, showers, an evening sing-song and comfortable beds.

On the other one you take everything in with you, and pack all your refuse out, and you are in a communal bunkroom after cooking your own meals. I don't know if showers are available, but probably not.

Of course, there is a huge difference in the cost  of the 2 walks.

This country gets 10 feet of rain a year, so prepare to get wet, and stay wet for the duration of the walk.

Make full enquiries with the Dept of Conservation (Google it) as to what you will require.

Ahhh, the milford track. I personally prefer the Kepler but the Milford does have a great height. Nope you don't need to bring a stove, they have some already. Enjoy your trip. New Zealand is a beautiful country, especially the Fiordland.

BTW, I suggest if you have time, since you're near there. Go kayaking in Milford Sound, it's absolutely breathtaking.

the milford track fantastic! i haven't done it yet but intend to do it next season, I have done the kepler though and have heard also that the Kepler is better scenery wise.

But yes huts are supplied with gas stoves and gas lighting also but definetly worth packing some candles/a headlight for in the bunk rooms.

Also a waterproof jacket and pack cover are a must! as its pretty much guaranteed you'll encounter at least some rain whilst on the track

if you have a small stove then it wouldn't hurt to pack one "just in case" cause you may decide you want a warm drink whilst walking throughout the day and/or the cooking spaces can get crowded in the huts (they may only have 12 or so gas rings) so this would allow you freedom to cook when you want, where you want.

p.s I hope you are doing the "freedom" walk not the guided walk, as the guided walk is not what tramping is about at all! part of the fun is carrying your life for four days on your back, and of course there aren't showers, again thats what tramping is all about, you'll feel so much better if you do it unguided and you won't feel like such a tourist that way too
