My daughter started solids about 2 months ago... she is now 6 months 1 week. When she started, I was told to ALWAYS give her milk (breastfed) before solids at each meal. I am wondering how long I need to do that for..WHen do I start giving her solids without the milk first?

  1. When you are breast feeding, it's important to breast feed before solids.  If the baby isn't as hungry after solids, and doesn't nurse as much, you will begin producing less milk.

  2. Breastmilk should comprise at least 75-90% of nutrition at a year, 50-75% at 18 mos, and 25-50% at two years.  So, ideally, you wouldn't start giving her solids w/o milk until sometime after a year.

The reference below has the higher ratio of solid:breastmilk  listed.  I've heard the lower ratio, so, I'm going to say anything in that range is probably acceptable.

You give breastmilk FIRST so that solids don't displace breastmilk.  Solids in the first year are for experience and learning, not really for nutrition.

  3. Your daughter will need breast milk through out the day no matter what. I don't know who told you that about the milk first. Just give her food and breastmilk in between

  4. I'm surprised she even eats the solids after the milk i would think she will be to full i usually give my son solids 1st then milk and he usually takes about 2-3oz less
